Mental Health Awareness Week 2025
Posted on May 8, 2025
Next week (12th–18th of May) marks Mental Health Awareness Week across the UK — a time for reflection, action, and support. At Courtley H&S we want to take this opportunity to speak to you about something just as important as steel-toed boots and high-vis vests: your mental health.
This Year’s Theme is Community
In construction, no job gets done alone. Whether it’s laying foundations or raising a roof, success depends on teamwork, trust, and communication. That same spirit of community is what this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is all about.
Being part of a supportive community — on-site or off — has a powerful impact on our mental wellbeing. Human connection helps us feel seen, valued, and less alone when life gets tough. A quick chat during a tea break, checking in with a colleague, or simply saying “hello” can create bonds that protect our mental health.
The Hard Hat Doesn’t Make You Invincible
The construction industry still faces high rates of stress, depression, and suicide. It’s time to break the silence. Talking about mental health isn’t a weakness — it’s a strength. Whether you’re a site manager or apprentice, your mental wellbeing matters.
- 1 in 4 UK construction workers has considered taking their own life.
- Construction workers are 3 times more likely to die by suicide than the national average.
We must look out for one another, just as we do when it comes to physical safety.
How You Can Help
- Check In With Your Team – A simple “How’s things?” can open the door.
- Move More – Even 10 minutes of activity can clear the mind.
- Know the Signs – Irritability, withdrawal, fatigue, or lack of concentration might be red flags.
- Use Support Services – Signpost or encourage those who need support to reach out to national services (see below).

Final Thoughts
Mental health is just as important as physical health and they go hand-in-hand when it comes to staying safe at work. Let’s build a culture were asking for help is normal and looking after ourselves is part of the job.
Training
We offer a 1-day Level 2 Award in First Aid for Mental Health (MHFA) course which provides learners with the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions, how to start a supportive conversation and when and how to signpost a person to seek appropriate professional help. They will learn about the first aid action plan for mental health, be able to put it in place, and know how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.
