World Day for Safety and Health at Work: 28 April
Posted on March 31, 2026
World Day for Safety and Health at Work is a good moment each year to pause and look at how safely we’re working on site. As jobs get busy and deadlines tighten, it’s easy for small things to slip and it’s usually those small things that lead to the biggest problems. Taking a few minutes to refocus helps keep everyone alert and working safely.
A Reminder of the Everyday Risks
Construction remains one of the highest‑risk industries, and HSE’s reports show that most serious injuries still come from the same causes: falls from height, vehicle movements, and poor manual handling. These incidents rarely happen because someone deliberately took a risk, they happen because a walkway wasn’t cleared, a ladder wasn’t checked, or a task was rushed. World Safety Day is a reminder that the basics matter. When the basics slip, people get hurt.
Keeping Sites Tidy and Workable
Good housekeeping is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent accidents. Clear walkways, tidy work areas and properly stored materials reduce slips, trips and blocked escape routes. When everyone takes responsibility for the space around them, the whole site becomes safer and easier to work in.
Working at height also deserves renewed attention. Using the right equipment, checking platforms and ladders, and taking the time to set up properly can prevent life‑changing injuries. A few extra minutes spent doing things correctly is always worth it.
Vehicle movements are another area where small improvements go a long way. Sticking to designated routes, using banksmen where needed and keeping visibility clear can prevent serious incidents, most of which happen at low speed and are entirely avoidable.
Manual handling continues to cause long‑term injuries. Planning lifts, using mechanical aids and asking for help when needed protects workers from strains and back problems that can last a lifetime.
Keeping Safety Front of Mind
Short reminders, toolbox talks and quick briefings help keep safety visible. Even experienced workers benefit from refreshers, especially when tasks change or new risks appear.
Encouraging people to stop and think before starting a job, to report hazards straight away and to speak up if something doesn’t look right helps build a site where everyone looks out for each other.
At Courtley Health & Safety, we provide practical training, toolbox talks, site guidance, and ongoing advice to help businesses keep their teams confident, informed, and working safely.
World Safety Day isn’t just a date on the calendar, it’s a chance to reset expectations and remind everyone that safety is part of the job, not an add‑on. A few minutes spent reviewing risks now can prevent serious incidents later. By keeping safety part of everyday conversations, you help create a site where people feel supported, informed and able to work with confidence.
