Preventing Slips, Trips, and Falls: Simple Steps to Safer Workplaces

Posted on September 30, 2025

Slips, trips, and falls remain the most common cause of workplace accidents in the UK, accounting for over a third of all reported major injuries.  While they may sound minor compared to more dramatic hazards, the consequences can be serious ranging from sprains and fractures to long-term absence from work.  The good news?  Most of these incidents are preventable with practical steps and consistent awareness.

Why They Happen

The main causes of slips, trips, and falls are surprisingly simple:

  • Slips – often caused by wet or oily surfaces, loose rugs, or spills that aren’t promptly cleaned.
  • Trips – typically due to cluttered walkways, uneven flooring, trailing cables, or poor housekeeping.
  • Falls – usually occur from low heights, such as steps, ladders, or small platforms, but even a short fall can cause significant harm.

Simple Prevention Measures

  1. Keep floors clean and dry – place mats at entrances, clean up spills immediately, and use appropriate signage when surfaces are wet.
  2. Good housekeeping – encourage staff to keep walkways clear of clutter, boxes, and bags.
  3. Safe storage of cables – use cable covers or reroute wires to avoid trailing hazards.
  4. Adequate lighting – ensure corridors, stairwells, and outdoor areas are well lit, especially as the darker evenings approach.
  5. Regular maintenance – fix uneven flooring, loose handrails, or damaged steps promptly.
  6. Footwear policies – where appropriate, provide or encourage footwear with slip-resistant soles.

Legal Responsibilities

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers must ensure workplaces are safe and risks are minimised “so far as is reasonably practicable.” Failure to manage slip, trip, and fall hazards can result in costly claims, fines, and reputational damage.

Building a Safety Culture

Beyond policies and signage, prevention comes down to culture.  When employees feel confident to report hazards; whether that’s a leaky roof, a frayed carpet, or a missing stair tread you’re far more likely to catch risks before they cause harm.  Encourage staff to “see it, sort it, or report it.”

Seasonal Reminder

As autumn sets in, wet leaves, muddy boots, and darker days all add to the risks.  A seasonal walk-through inspection of your premises can highlight where additional mats, outdoor lighting, or cleaning schedules are needed.

Slips, trips, and falls are simple risks with simple solutions, but they require constant attention.  A proactive approach will not only protect your staff but also demonstrate your commitment to creating a safe and supportive workplace.
