World Environment Day: 5 June & Clean Air Day: 19 June 2026
Posted on May 28, 2026
June puts a spotlight on two important dates for the construction industry:
- World Environment Day on the 5th of June, and
- Clean Air Day on the 19th of June 2026
Together, they provide a valuable opportunity to focus on how we manage chemicals, control dust and emissions, and protect both the environment and the health of those working on site.
Construction activities often involve the use of hazardous substances covered under COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health). These include paints, solvents, adhesives, cement, and silica dust generated during cutting or drilling. Without proper controls, exposure can lead to serious long-term health issues, including respiratory diseases and skin conditions. Effective COSHH management starts with risk assessment—identifying hazardous substances, understanding how exposure occurs, and implementing suitable control measures.
Waste management is another key environmental consideration. Poor handling of chemical waste or construction materials can lead to pollution of land and watercourses. Segregating waste, storing hazardous materials correctly, and ensuring safe disposal through licensed contractors are essential steps in reducing environmental impact.
With Clean Air Day highlighting the importance of air quality, it’s crucial to address both outdoor and indoor air risks on construction sites. Dust, fumes, and vapours can quickly build up in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas, putting workers at risk. Simple measures such as local exhaust ventilation, dampening down dust, and limiting exposure time can significantly improve air quality.
Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) plays a vital role where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means. However, RPE is only effective if it is correctly selected, properly fitted, and well maintained.
Face fit testing, regular inspection, and proper storage are all critical to ensuring that equipment provides the intended level of protection. Workers must also be trained to understand when and how to use RPE effectively.
These awareness days are a reminder that protecting the environment goes hand in hand with protecting people. By strengthening our approach to COSHH, improving waste management, and prioritising air quality, the construction industry can create safer, healthier, and more sustainable workplaces.
Take this opportunity in June to review your site controls, engage your workforce, and reinforce the importance of clean air and responsible chemical management—because a safer site is a healthier site for everyone.
Courtley Health & Safety offers 1/2-day COSHH Assessor Training (free to Members) to help keep employees up to date with current legislation and best practice.
We also provide Face Fit Testing, which is free to Members during our Face Fit Open Days, held on the second Wednesday of every month.
