Changes to CITB Funding for Site Safety Plus (SSP) Short Courses
Posted on June 5, 2026
The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has made significant changes to how funding is accessed for short Site Safety Plus (SSP) courses, including popular programmes such as the Health and Safety Awareness (HSA), Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS), and Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) courses.
These changes have caused some confusion for employers and learners, so we’ve put together a simple overview of what’s changed and what you need to do to access funding.
What Has Changed?
Historically, eligible employers could claim grant funding for SSP courses through CITB’s Grants Scheme, with training providers often managing much of the process on the employer’s behalf.
Under the new arrangements, short SSP courses are no longer funded through the traditional Grants Scheme. Instead, funding is being distributed through local CITB Employer Networks.
This means training providers can no longer claim grant funding on behalf of employers. The responsibility for securing funding now sits directly with the employer.
How Do Employers Access Funding?
If you wish to receive CITB funding towards the cost of a short SSP course, you will need to contact your local CITB Customer Engagement Adviser.
Your Adviser can discuss the funding opportunities available in your area and, where appropriate, arrange funding through the relevant Employer Network.
Once funding has been approved, CITB will place an order directly with the training provider for their contribution towards the course cost.

What Does This Mean for Course Bookings?
The booking process itself remains largely unchanged. Employers can still book courses with their preferred training provider in the normal way.
However, if you intend to access CITB funding, we strongly recommend speaking with your Customer Engagement Adviser before making payment for your training, as CITB’s contribution is paid direct to the training provider.
