PUWER & Equipment Safety: Keeping Construction Tools and Plant Safe to Use

The safe use of tools and equipment is fundamental to every construction site. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) set out clear requirements to ensure that all work equipment is suitable, maintained, and used safely – helping to prevent accidents and injuries.

From handheld power tools to large plant machinery, equipment must be fit for purpose and used only for the tasks it was designed for. Before use, all tools should be checked for visible defects such as damaged cables, worn components, or missing guards. Faulty equipment should be taken out of service immediately and clearly labelled to prevent further use.

Regular inspections are a key part of PUWER compliance. This includes pre-use checks by operators as well as more formal, recorded inspections carried out at appropriate intervals. Keeping accurate records helps demonstrate compliance and ensures that potential issues are identified early.

Maintenance is equally important. Equipment should be serviced in line with manufacturer guidance, with repairs carried out by competent personnel. Poorly maintained equipment not only increases the risk of failure but can also lead to serious incidents on site.

Training and competence play a crucial role in equipment safety. Workers must be properly trained in the correct use of the tools and machinery they operate, including understanding any limitations and safety features. Supervisors should ensure that only authorised personnel use specific equipment, particularly when it comes to higher-risk machinery.

Safe systems of work should also be in place. This includes ensuring guards and safety devices are correctly fitted, using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintaining good housekeeping to reduce hazards around equipment use.

PUWER is not just about compliance – it’s about creating a safer working environment for everyone on site. By prioritising inspections, maintenance, and proper use of equipment, construction teams can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and keep projects running safely and efficiently.
