Fire safety is a critical consideration across all stages of construction, and Fire Door Safety Week (21^st-25^th September 2026) is an important reminder of the role that fire doors, escape routes, and compartmentation play in protecting lives and property.

Fire doors are a vital part of a building’s passive fire protection system. When properly installed and maintained, they are designed to resist the spread of fire and smoke for a specified period, allowing occupants time to evacuate safely. On construction sites, fire doors are often installed early and can be subject to damage, alteration, or misuse as works progress. It’s essential that they are regularly inspected to ensure they remain fit for purpose – this includes checking seals, hinges, closers, and ensuring doors are not wedged open.

Escape routes must always be clearly identified, kept unobstructed, and suitable for the number of people on site. As construction projects evolve, so too should fire escape plans. Temporary changes to layout, storage of materials, or ongoing works can all impact safe evacuation if not carefully managed. Regular reviews and clear communication with the workforce are key to ensuring everyone knows how to exit safely in an emergency.

Compartmentation is another crucial element of fire safety. By dividing a building into fire-resistant sections, compartmentation helps contain fire and smoke, limiting damage and protecting escape routes. However, its effectiveness depends on proper installation and maintaining its integrity. Penetrations for services such as cables and pipework must be appropriately sealed using approved fire-stopping methods – poor workmanship in this area can significantly undermine fire protection.

Planning is at the heart of effective fire safety. Risk assessments should consider the stage of the build, materials on site, and potential ignition sources. Fire detection, alarm systems, and emergency procedures must be in place and regularly tested.
