Fire Safety: Keeping Construction Sites Safe

Posted on October 30, 2026

In the run up to Bonfire Night, it’s a good reminder for construction sites to review fire risks, implement effective controls, and raise awareness among all workers.  Construction environments are inherently dynamic, and fire hazards can arise from multiple sources, making vigilance essential.

A robust Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) is the foundation of fire safety.  It identifies potential ignition sources, combustible materials, and areas where fire could spread.  On site, this might include flammable liquids, packaging materials, timber, and other construction waste.  The assessment should be reviewed regularly, especially when site activities, materials, or layouts change.

Fire extinguishers are a critical first line of defence, but only if they are correctly selected, regularly inspected, and easily accessible.  Different types of extinguishers – water, foam, CO₂ and powder – are suitable for different fires.  Workers must know which to use and how to operate them safely.  Training sessions and clear signage can make the difference in an emergency.

Electrical fire risks are another major concern.  Temporary power supplies, overloaded circuits, damaged cables, and portable tools can all ignite fires if not properly managed.

Regular inspection, correct earthing, and adherence to safe working practices reduce these risks significantly.

Seasonal factors can also impact fire safety.  In autumn and winter, drying materials, increased use of heaters, and changes in weather can raise fire risks.  Planning for seasonal hazards; such as safe storage of fuels, monitoring temporary heating, and maintaining clear escape routes, helps keep everyone safe throughout the year.

This is an ideal opportunity for construction teams to check equipment, review procedures, and refresh training.  By prioritising risk assessments, maintaining fire-fighting equipment, managing electrical hazards, and planning for seasonal risks, we can protect both lives and property while ensuring work continues safely.

Courtley H&S are running a ½-day Fire Awareness/Marshal course in Liverpool, on the 19th of November, which is FREE to Members.  Click the link for more information/to book, or get in touch and we’ll be happy to help.
