No Falls Week: 18–22 May

Posted on April 30, 2026

Protecting Construction Workers at Height

Falls from height remain the leading cause of fatalities in the construction industry, making No Falls Week (18–22 May) a critical opportunity to refocus on the risks and reinforce safe working practices across all sites.

Construction work frequently involves operating at height, whether on scaffolding, ladders, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), or fragile roof surfaces.  Each brings its own hazards.  Fragile materials such as roof lights and aging sheeting can fail without warning, while poorly erected or modified scaffolding increases the risk of collapse or falls.  Ladders, often seen as a quick solution, are frequently misused or positioned incorrectly, and MEWPs require trained operators who understand both the equipment and the environment they’re working in.

Planning is key.  Before any work at height begins, tasks should be properly assessed, and the most suitable access equipment selected.  Wherever possible, work at height should be avoided altogether, or carried out using collective protection measures such as guardrails and edge protection.  When this isn’t feasible, personal fall protection systems must be used correctly and consistently.

No Falls Week is also about people.  Competence, supervision, and a strong safety culture are essential on every construction site.  Workers should feel confident to speak up about unsafe conditions, and supervisors must ensure that all equipment is inspected, maintained, and used as intended.

This week, take the time to review your site practices: check scaffolding inspections are up to date, ensure ladder use is justified and controlled, confirm MEWP operators are trained, and clearly identify any fragile surfaces.  Small actions can make a significant difference.

By working together, the construction industry can reduce the risk of falls and ensure that everyone goes home safely at the end of the day.
